Way Off
film
Way Off is a clash of two opposing worlds. At 55, why does the out-of-shape Eliot step, like an alien, into the dangerous space of the boxing ring? In this surreal journey, taking the punches maybe the only way to save his life.
Through grueling training and spiritual lessons framed in the language of boxing, Eliot begins to question his passive, liberal worldview and considers whether the structure of a fight—its discipline, rules, and clarity—might be the key to finding meaning at this late stage of life. The film balances humor and absurdity as Eliot’s journey, fraught with existential questions, culminates in a metaphorical “fight” for a new beginning, only to leave him waking up in his crashed car—surviving to live again.
With rich, improvised dialogue and striking visual effects, “Way Off” uses boxing as a metaphor for religion, offering a darkly humorous, deeply reflective exploration of self, belief, and the desire to reclaim control over one’s own fate.
